What if an ADHD diagnosis is made, and a trial of medication is suggested?
Medication can certainly be very helpful for many people with ADHD. If medication is tried, then there will need to be a follow-up appointment 4 weeks’ later to review the trial of medication. There may need to be some fine tuning with an email conversation during the 4 weeks.
What other approaches are there to understanding and managing ADHD?
Please see my resources page. In general, understanding how ADHD is affecting you for your child or teenager, and helping those around you understand it and know what they can do, is a crucial first step. Even if medication is helpful for focus and other symptoms, there may still be a need for inputs around learning to be organised, and other supports may be needed for issues such as anxiety, stress, or low mood. Parents of teenagers can help their young person immensely by, for example, looking at parenting courses designed for parents of teenagers. These courses are the evidence-based proven best approach for oppositional behaviour. These are all things that we can discuss.
